He stopped in front of Nathan again, smiling that too-sweet, too-knowing smile.
“Now,” Ezekiel said, spreading his hands like a storyteller about to reveal a delicious secret, “each noble house was said to mirror a primal force of the world.”
He ticked them off slowly, as if tasting each one:
“Mercer — silver — water. Fluid, relentless, capable of gentleness or devastation. You can drown quietly or be swept away in a storm.”
He glanced toward where the distant Mercer banners once stood in tatters. “Fitting, don’t you think?”
