I took a deep breath and read her recent post. “I’m not better, but I’m trying. Work is helping me. The flowers are cheering me up. I hope you are all doing great. His friend’s eyes widened before it turned to crescents as he broke into a wide, toothy grin. His eyes still sparkled, even if they became mere lines when he smiled. I felt my eyebrows relax a bit, and my body ceased all movements at the sight. It felt like my eyes decided to glue themselves on his joyful face. It’s moments like these that always left me in awe. It serves as a reminder for me that no matter how dark my life gets, I can always latch onto these little moments that can give me hope—hope that someday, even if I only have the dimmest light, I could get out of that abyss…

(Lily POV) Laughter makes our feelings light. It is always good to laugh. It helps us to be more cheerful. To make feat vanish and they will be the one scared of us, because in this world, we need to fight. Many people are already suffering but if you will add to the burden of your feelings, the world being negative will explode. So, fight for your happiness with a smile on your lips.

Seeing them will only make her cry. "My room?" I couldn't help repeating. Wasn't that our room? Every detail in that space, from the walls to the hangers, had been set up by the two of us. The wall on the west was covered with photos from our college graduation to our early careers. It had memories of how we built a life in this city together. Layne used to run his fingers over my smile in those yellowing photographs. "These are the most precious memories I have. Aleah, I'll make sure you always smile like this."

I had the opportunity to use my phone’s camera for the picture. My daughter sent pictures of herself, and lots of selfies of her and Nathalie. The background was her bedroom and the playroom. They were both smiling in the pictures, and she even sent some candid shots of Nathalie. As I stare at each picture, a smile involuntarily spreads across my face, chasing away the lines of stress etched moments before. I find myself replaying the image over and over. My corners of my eyes crinkled with a joy so pure and I almost forgot where I was. For a brief, beautiful moment, the world outside fades away, replaced only by the warmth of my family–future family’s love–Nathalie and Brianna.

I couldn’t remember t now. There is no one I could call. Help will not arrive. What is help anyway? Is it a step towards happiness? So, what is happiness? Is it worth living for?
