Behind me, I heard Ael's sharp intake of breath. "That's not possible," he said, his voice barely audible over the wind that had picked up as the barriers fell. "Those gates have never yielded to anyone. They're supposed to be impenetrable. Malvoryn himself designed them to resist the old magic, the new magic, everything." I didn't answer him. I didn't have the energy to waste on explanations. Every ounce of my focus, every scrap of consciousness, was directed toward one thing…Sylvara.

He leaned back, the blue light of the monitor casting sharp, hollow shadows across his face. "This isn't standard Council encryption, Fenn," Jax muttered, rubbing his eyes. "This is military-grade, multi-layered 'ghost' coding. It’s designed to self-destruct if I try to force the door. One wrong keystroke and the whole drive turns into a paperweight."

"They’re boxing us in. Marcus, what’s the report from the scouts at the Red River?" ​"The river is blocked, Alpha," Marcus said, his face pale. "A shimmering curtain of blue light has dropped across the water. Sela tried to send a hawk through it. The bird... it didn't die, but it forgot how to fly. It just fell. The barrier is a 'Neural Dampener.' It suppresses the will to cross." ​"They're turning our home into a cage," Rhea hissed.

It had turned into the hardest diamond. It was cold, brilliant, and impenetrable.

To keep this barrier active for long, the artefact needed to absorb a lot of beast cores, and thankfully, they had a lot in their storage ring. After letting it absorb enough for its barrier to last around 20 hours, Wilhelmina set it up. But that spider's hearing was excellent; even if it couldn't see them, if they made any noise, it would be all over.

There is just a vast impossible silence where she should be. Zarek exhales slowly. “Whatever they used blocks everything.” I grip the edge of the table hard enough for cracks to splinter through the crystal beneath my palm. “That should not be possible.” “No,” he agrees grimly. “It shouldn’t.” But it is.
