“They talk about overthrow, about resistance, about breaking chains. They do not talk about the quiet days after, when nothing is wrong but nothing is settled either.”
“That is where most failures happen,” I said.
He nodded. “Because people mistake uncertainty for danger.”
“Or mistake boredom for collapse,” I added.
We stood together in silence, watching the water move past stones worn smooth by time rather than force.
Later, an Elder sought me out. Not with accusation this time, but concern stripped of authority.
“They will talk about us,” she said. “Word will spread.”
“It already is,” I replied.
“And if others come?” she asked. “Not cautious ones. Not patient ones.”
