Break time. I went to the fridge, and treat myself to a bottle of beer, I need to slow down for tonight. I need to be on alert, and not embarrass myself. I needed the money, I need to still be working until my tuition is paid off, and oh yeah... the hospital bill also. I took a ten-minute break, on each working hour. It was a trick my shrink gave me, to control my nerves. To keep me relaxed, and focused but not on overdrive.

she said, sounding hesitant, “I know you’re busy, but Susie’s school called. She scraped her knee during recess and wouldn’t stop crying until I told her you were coming.” He glanced at the envelope once more. “I’ll be there,” he said. He set it down. Again. ⸻ Claire spent those same days learning how to breathe in silence. The apartment she had rented was small, modest, and empty—but it was hers. No marble floors. No echoing hallways. Just quiet and space and air that felt lighter in her lungs. She unpacked slowly, deliberately. She did not check her phone. She already knew what she would find there.

'How are we getting out of here alive? 'Let us hope that your mates will come up with a good rescue plan,' the doctor replied. 'My mates do not know where I am,' I said. 'They will very soon. These ones will contact them,' the doctor said. 'Now listen, in thirty minutes plus, I am going to knock at that door and tell them that you are awake. When they come in, you are going to pretend as if you were affected by the drug. Let spit pour out of your mouth if necessary. We need you to be of clear mind by the time your mates get here,' the doctor said and I nodded my understanding.

Where’s Tobi? Emma’s Pov My eyes opened slowly and closed almost immediately as direct sun from the window hit them. I groan inwardly, I felt my head started to bang and I felt the urge to puke. I almost got out of the bed but a heavy figure stopped me from moving. ‘Heavy Figure?’

I just got another text from Mum: Please remember your medication, your doctor says you aren't taking any. It seemed like ages since I had seen Mum. At the time I didn't even realise why or really understand how much time it had been between meds. I had been blocking it out, my doctor, the meds and everything. They say the brain is an expert at blocking out things. I had no idea. I thought I was at school, watching this vegetarian girl frowning in the food court. I thought I was listening to her thoughts. This is what I heard:
