Raymond finished, his tone full of warning. As I soaked his words in, I realised he was right. I knew next to nothing about Alpha Evan. Only that he was a hybrid and seemed like a man who was good at heart. But now, I wasn't so sure. What if the man was nice only in front of me to lure me away from here? What if it was all an act and he was actually a ruthless tyrant, waiting for the right moment to show his true colours?

I always failed to impress my mate but this time I will try hard to get her back. Valentina had always been wary of Archard. He was charming and handsome, but there was something dark and sinister about him. She could sense it in his eyes, his voice, his touch. He always seemed to have a hidden agenda, a secret motive. He always seemed to be plotting something, something evil and this time he is planning something big for her.

Besides, a villain usually had sharper senses, and that was why it was not easy for the hero to defeat them. Vivian wouldn't say she was the hero here, but she was sure that Lily was the villain, and that woman also had the sharp senses of a true villain. Even if she hadn't said anything, Lily could already tell that she was hiding something, and Vivian knew that it wasn't a good sign for her. 'That mysterious man seems to be rich and powerful, and judging from this woman's temperament, she might soon hire people to investigate. If that man finds out, I'll be in trouble,' she thought to herself instead of immediately responding to the older woman.

She must be very out of her mind to think all of that is legit. "You think you have power over humans? Every villain has a story to tell. It’s either insecurity, stupidity, or just plain evil that is pushing them to do all of this. Either way, as boring as it may sound, I need time to plan my escape, so I will take the opportunity to listen to whatever they have to say.

“You better be joking. Why wouldn’t she be? Did you kill her overnight?” I frowned at him. “That’s not… Look at who’s mad at me for keeping secrets. You knew exactly what monster Kai was and yet you didn’t tell me. I figured out the hard way by watching him suck the life out of Ophilia.” “Kai’s demon side has never been a secret. He is half Kryvan, half human. Everyone knows this.” “Everyone except us apparently.” Naz glared. “That’s because you are the only two who haven't particularly gone on their knees to beg him to suck from them. It’s like a trophy if Kai sucks from you.”

Josiah's defenses were slipping, his allies thinning. And still… he didn’t see me coming. He was too busy playing hero. But I wasn’t playing anything. A faint, thrilling heat began to uncoil in her stomach. "If your son knew his father was sleeping with the woman he loves, I imagine he'd be quite horrified," Nicha sneered. The petite woman made a move to get up and leave. This middle-aged man was simply far too charismatic. Even though he was approaching his fifties, his magnetism was undeniably dangerous. "I'm not the only villain here, Nicha. You're just as wicked as I am," Chayon said, his jaw tightening. "And so what?" the younger woman fired back.

The comb disappears into the dark below, toward the shimmering veil of the Forbidden Zone. I realise, with a calm that does not belong to a dying woman, that I will follow it. Liam tilts my face up to his. He does this gently, with one hand, the way you tilt a lover's face to kiss her. His blue-and-purple scales are flecked now with my blood. His silver-tipped fins catch the last of the twilight the way the comb did. He is beautiful. He has always been beautiful. I hate him with a depth I did not know I had, because I am, or I have been, a queen who kneels in the market to sing babies to sleep and who has been told all seven months of her reign that she is too soft for this throne.
