She felt a connection to history as she did, and it made her feel alive. She also couldn’t help feeling, every time she picked up a book, that it held a riddle, some mystery to be solved—and that thrilled her. For some reason, she had always felt that there was a mystery lingering in her consciousness, something she needed to solve. She didn’t know what. It didn’t make sense, and that bothered her. When she worked on a rare book, at least she could solve clues she couldn’t put her fingers on in real life.

I beamed. "Crazy, isn't it?" "Fucking crazy, for real." "First, we put THE DA VINCI CODE by DAN BROWN here." He picked out the book and inserted it in the center line of the shelf. He put HOW TO STOP TIME by MATT HAIG, followed by EVERGREEN by NAOMI HIRAHARA. "Then KISS THE GIRLS by JAMES PATTERSON." He put it next to the first book. "I've read that." I went on in a spur of excitement. "It's a thriller and mystery novel about a detective who's trying to track down a serial killer. So many twists and cliffhangers. Total page-turner." I giggled.

I replied, shaking his hand briefly before pulling it back, a tingle left in its place. “So, Kalia, what’s so captivating in that book of yours that you almost missed the best coffee in town?” He nodded toward my cup. I tilted my head, considering him. “You are assuming I don’t already know that this place has the best coffee.” He raised an eyebrow. “Fair enough. But now I’m curious about the book.” I held it up, the cover facing him. “It’s a mystery novel. Keeps me on my toes.” He leaned in slightly, intrigued. “A mystery, huh? So, you like solving puzzles?”

I despised them almost as much as I despised being woken up from my sleep, I rolled my eyes before looking over at Justin, Justin was a tall lanky guy, three years my junior and completely obsessed with murders. “Rush, it is an extremely high profile case and there’s a lot of second guessing going around, let’s face it the Hudson’s are not short of enemies. They’ve been crawling out from the shadows for some time now.” there was a brief pause where Justin and I gave each other a knowing look, only a person with our experience would know that a person who is missing, is a person of interest. “If a person has nothing to hide, why would they run?” I said to Justin while raising an arched eyebro

Something sinister lay in the silence and Dan turned to scan the way. He wouldn't be caught off guard again. A shadow shifted in his periphery, and he turned as a man stepped from between two cars. Medium heights. Medium build. Well-dressed and carrying a briefcase. Not someone Betty would normally have noticed. Not someone she would normally have thought of as a threat. But these weren't normal circumstances, and everyone was a threat until proven otherwise. "Hey!" the man called out, offering a quick wave and a brief smile. "I've locked myself out of my car, and my cell phone is in it. Can you give me a hand?"

I murmured, wiping it clean with a tissue. The book was bound in black leather, its cover adorned with a golden chain that resembled shackles. It exuded an air of mystery and darkness. Curiosity piqued, I traced my fingers along the intricate chains. Swallowing hard, I attempted to read the title, but the words were unfamiliar. Flipping it open, I was met with pages filled with an unrecognizable language. I tried to decipher it, even searching online for clues, but nothing matched. As I flipped through the pages, my attention was drawn to a small bookmark tucked inside. Someone had been reading this.

Curiosity continuously gnaws at my heart. Pushing the door open, I gasped loudly at the books on different shelves. Surprisingly, it is an in-house library. What caught my attention the most was the large book with a strange cover and unreadable writings, sitting pretty on a book stand. It made me wonder why it was a standalone and not on the shelf like the others. Glancing back at the door, I felt the urge to back away, but I stayed back.

When I turned it over, I noticed something strange. There was no title. No markings. Just a small, black padlock fixed to the side, sealing it shut. A locked book. That was unusual. Very unusual. My curiosity sharpened. I walked back to the desk and sat down again, setting the red book in front of me. The lamp’s light reflected off its surface, making it gleam faintly. The padlock looked old—ancient, even—but strong. The metal was dark and cool to the touch. “What are you hiding?” I murmured, tracing a finger along the lock.

The thought makes my chest tighten, and I force myself to take a deep breath. It is obvious there is more to that office than he lets on. Something is hidden there, something important. And as scared as I am, I feel a pull to uncover whatever mystery lies beneath the surface. I enjoy riddles, after all. The note that slipped out of the book yesterday still lingers in my mind, puzzling me with its cryptic contents. I want answers. I shake my head at my own foolishness, feeling both guilty and determined at the same time. The guilt gnaws at me, but the curiosity is stronger, pulling me toward the mystery like a moth to a flame.
