It looked very ancient as it was torn at some edges. “I picked this up during one of my research trips.” She said as she handed the book to Annabelle. “ It has some information on Luke but it doesn’t state his weakness. Although it did leave some clues. Difficult clues.” Annabelle opened the book. The words were written as if from a feather dipped in ink which signified the age of the book. Annabelle read it out:

I sat beside her, and she immediately stretched her legs back out, her feet landing in my lap. "What are you reading?" She held up the book without looking away from the page. "A mystery novel. A detective in Victorian London." I caught sight of the cover. A woman in a low-cut dress leaned against a man in a top hat, their faces inches apart in the fog. The Scarlet Letter Murders. I grabbed the book from her hands. "Hey!" She sat up, reaching for it. I flipped through a few pages. My eyes landed on a passage. His mouth found the hollow of her throat as his fingers worked the laces of her corset…

He thought that was what made it fun, not knowing what you were going to read for the day, and he reveled in that surprise. Some days he could be reading an action novel and another day he could be reading a cookbook. As Dmitri looked at the cover of his book, he smiled. It was a mystery thriller novel. He was excited to read it because it had been a while since he had last read a novel like this one. Just as Dmitri was getting cozy, he heard the bell above the entrance door jingle. He didn't think anything of it. It wasn't like he was the only one who knew this place.

It was like searching for a needle in a haystack, and with every passing minute, the urgency only grew. But then, as I was about to give up for the night, something caught my eye—a small, weathered book tucked away on the bottom shelf. Its cover was faded, the title barely legible, but there was something about it that drew me in. I carefully pulled it from the shelf, the pages brittle and yellowed with age. The title read, *The Lost Chronicles: A History of the Ancient Magics*. My heart raced as I opened the book, scanning the pages for anything that might be relevant. It wasn’t long before I found a section that made my breath catch in my throat.

"Any favorites?" "There's this series about ancient pack wars that's surprisingly well-researched. And I have a weakness for detective novels, though don't tell Carson. He thinks they're a waste of time, but I once caught him reading one and he was too focused on it to even know I was standing in the same room as he was." "Your secret's safe with me, maybe he just doesnt want to admit how good it is." She grinned. "I love mysteries too. Have you read the Inspector Blackwood series?"

I wake up the next morning with my head buzzing. I had been up most of the night trying to figure all of this out. None of it made sense. It's not fair, on the crime shows and on the mystery books all of the pieces fit together perfectly if you really think about it, why doesn't this? Stupid life, it's time to be more like a book.

She couldn't help but wonder what secrets these books held, and what mysteries they could uncover. What questions they could answer.

I was delighted to uncover new layers beneath this prickly barista's tough exterior. "So mysteries are your favorite books? Any current authors you'd recommend?" I asked, genuinely curious to know more about her tastes. Aria's eyes lit up, clearly passionate about this topic. "Oh yes! I just finished a great atmospheric thriller by Ruth Ware. And Jean Kwok writes amazing psychological suspense." I smiled as she rattled off a whole list of mystery writers and descriptors for why she loved them. Her enthusiasm was captivating. "I may have to check out some of those. I tend toward action thrillers, but I'm open to new things," I said.

I was in the library as usual reading a book I picked from the shelf when the door suddenly opened. The devil was back! He looked at me with a smirk on his face. “Nice choice of book for someone as innocent as you”. The book was about murder. A mystery novel to help keep my mind occupied rather than dwelling on my problems. I liked romance as much as the next girl but needed something darker and more compelling. Something more relatable to the state of my life.

“Yes, you are. You always do this. Now I’m suspicious about your reluctance to take on any Mafia-related project. You literally are a Mafia encyclopaedia.” I took a deep breath. Some things about my life were better buried. “I like to know about that world. That’s it. There’s no other reason. I don’t involve myself in that world because coming out of it is horrifying and dangerous, and I have a family, too.” “I think there’s more to it than you let on.” There was. It was all in the past.
