His face was partially shifted, snout forming, eyes sealed shut. They had forced it. Forced the change before the body was ready. Before the natural age of twenty-one, when the dragon side awakens fully and safely. They had done this to a baby. A sound broke out of me. Not a scream. Not even a cry. It was raw. Guttural. Animal. The tanks shook. Glass spider-webbed and then shattered all at once. Every single tank. The pale blue liquid poured out in waves, soaking my clothes, cutting cold into my skin.

I said, careful with my words. "Who is real?" Eren asked. She was still confused. "The beast," I said. I made my voice sound happy and surprised. "My dragon. She is talking to me. In my head." Eren's mouth fell open. "The dragon? She is awake? You mean like your actual dragon is awake? After all this time?" I nodded. I forced a big smile. "Yes. Her name is Veylara. She says my anger woke her up."

I do have to say – she is beyond stunning. I didn’t get to see what the men looked like in their dragon forms considering we took off before they did, but Athena’s dragon is absolutely beautiful. Magnificent. She has bright ruby eyes, and she is pitch black from head to toe. She blends into the dark of night beautifully.

A deep, powerful, heavy roar, and her body seemed consumed in flames. I moved to the side just as she passed, her blazing eyes furious and her face contorted with rage. Then, she burst into flames. Her body was changing inside the growing inferno until the massive body of a dragon appeared. Her black scales and red eyes sent me into a shock. I suspected, but seeing her true form with my own eyes left me stunned.
