Irving Library Timings Novels & Stories

With her charity gala just two weeks away, I shouldn't be taking up her time with my concerns. The clock is ticking, and Ivy is not one to mess with. “10 am sharp. No excuses. No oversleeping. No 'my cat ate my homework' nonsense,” she barks into the phone. “I'm counting down the minutes. It's 8 am, so I expect to see you in two hours.” ***

They stood in the reading room at six o'clock. The library had been open for nine hours. The first Tuesday of August, the civic calendar's beginning, the letter delivered to the first of its strangers. In those nine hours: two hundred and fourteen people through the covered approach. Not a large opening-day number — not the event attendance, not the formal-occasion crowd. The ordinary two hundred and fourteen: the people who had been using the temporary location and transferred their habit to the permanent building, the curious who had seen the announcement, the ones who had come without particular purpose because the library was on their route and it was open and they went in.

Immediately after breakfast, Iris asked James if they had a library where she could pass the time reading books. She wasn’t a big fan of books and didn’t read as much as Lia, one of the maids back at the Taylors' mansion but there was a limited number of things for her to do here and the library would be the perfect place to avoid Luca today.

I sighed. “Just be ready this time, and I’ll be here at 6 a.m. You can buy us both breakfast,” Iris said as she parked in front of my place. I gave a quick nod and opened the door but then paused. "Remember to call Alex," I reminded Iris. "He'll probably be disappointed that you cancelled tonight." "I know," Iris said, her voice softening.

Five minutes later, Ivan walked in with work documents and began reporting the day's schedule to Lambert. "Lambert, you have two meetings this morning. At noon, you have lunch with Miss Vann from CB Construction Group, and at 3 p.m., there's a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the branch office. Do you want to make any changes?" "No, that should be fine for now. Just make sure to give Lydia a copy of the meeting materials. She'll be joining me for the meetings later."
