I uttered, staring into blank space as I leaned my chin on my knuckles again. ~ Night had fallen, and i was still occupying myself with this particular business book which had caught my fancy for a while, now. I needed to get my mind off the current situation at home, just so I could wait for the next day when things would be resolved, and I would know what’s next. Apparently, waiting until tomorrow seemed like I had to wait for seventy-two hours, so it was only wise to occupy my mind with something interesting, and intriguing. “Do you mind lending me this book once you’re done with it?” I heard a child-like voice from nowhere, and I had to bring down the book from my face to see who was pro

Now I had regrets and I couldn't take any of it back. It was time to go. We'd only been here about half an hour, but it already seemed too long. It would take at least another half an hour to get to the location Stern had indicated. That was in the far reaches of the next county over and a good place to hide out. I was hoping that there would be no close neighbors and there was a place to hide seven men standing on the side of the road planning an invasion.

I was done messing up. I closed the book gently and whispered into the empty room… “I’ll stay. Always. No matter what.” Then I added again, voice stronger but simple… “You opened your door to me. So I’ll guard it with my life.” No matter what storms assemble. No matter what wars knock. No matter who undresses in his office again. I wasn’t running anymore. I was staying. And staying doesn’t need complex grammar. It just needs a body that refuses eviction from a heart that already signed the lease in blood.

He stood there for a long time, even after I waved goodbye to my friends. "Does he treat you well?" he asked. I did not turn back. I lifted my head and looked at the bright moon in the sky. "Very well." There was a long silence, so long I thought he had already left. Then his hoarse voice reached me. "I wish you happiness." I turned back and smiled at him. "Thank you. I wish you happiness too." The moon will always be there. So will my happiness.

She sat at the long table and read with her chin on her hand. He thought about the girl finishing the book and taking another. He thought about the threshold crossed — the long waiting and the unopened book and the six weeks and the page finally turned. He thought about the room that had held her through the not-yet, the room that had not required her to be ready, and the Thursday she was ready and the room was still there. He thought: the honest room outlasts the hesitation. He wrote in the library notes: The girl of eleven has taken a second book. The room held her through six weeks of not-yet. The threshold crossed in its own time.

To whoever comes after. *Stay.* *When someone is frightened and running and is certain that something has gone wrong with the world's design, stay. Do not chase. Do not force anything. Simply stay present, available, warm, for as long as it takes for the other person to understand that staying is real and is not going to stop being real.* *That is what I learned, from Elara, over sixty-eight years. Everything else, the network, the rooms, the policies, all of it, was built on top of that single thing: someone staying, long enough, for someone else to understand that the staying was permanent.*

The woman nodded. "Which one between the two can speak English, or are they just too informal?" she inquired. "Well," replied Mr. Shan turning around and pointing at Oboo, "this one can at least pluck out some meaning and respond moderately well. But the other I dont think, hes been so quiet."
