The next morning arrives, and I turn my phone on. Several messages and missed calls appear on my screen with several voice messages. I take a deep breath, sink into the couch, and open the text messages.

She placed a hand on Theo’s head, fingers curling behind his ears. “I love him,” she said, barely above a whisper. “But love won’t stop this curse. Not on its own.” She bent down and pressed her forehead gently to his. Theo closed his eyes. “Tell him that for me,” she murmured. “Tell him I’m doing this because I love him.”
