"No kidding." He ignored my sarcasm, remaining impassive. "The Russian mafia wants to take over our property in New York. They’re expanding too fast, eliminating competitors, claiming new territories. They’re cutting old deals and establishing new ones—on their own terms. Luigi Romano is caught in the middle of it." I swallowed hard, feeling a knot form in my stomach.

Coming back to my senses—only temporarily though, I sat on the bed directly opposite him now as I asked, "Does this mean you are no longer a member of the mafia?" He chuckled, but the sound was so empty it hurt me a little. "You can never leave the mafia, Liya. Once you are in, you are in for life. You can never remove yourself from the brotherhood and go scot-free. You will be haunted down until you are finally eliminated." My voice shook as I asked the next question, "E-Eliminated as in… killed?" He nodded once.
