“Wakey wakey!” Jace said as he pushed my door open without waiting for a reply. He walked inside with a wide grin like he had been up for hours. I rubbed my eyes. “Why are you acting like someone gave you a feast?” “Because today is the day we meet those little brats,” he said, tapping his fingers together in fake excitement. “You have not even seen them yet and you already call them brats.” I shook my head. “My great intuition says they will be brats. I trust my instincts.”

It was the bass-heavy rattle of massive speakers being tested downstairs, shaking the glass windows of my bedroom. I flinched, dropping my highlighter. The noise stopped, followed by the muffled sound of heavy footsteps walking down the hallway outside my room. I crept toward the door, unlocking it and cracking it open just an inch. The hallway was dark, but the light from the grand staircase illuminated Jace walking past. He was wearing a black Halden Athletics hoodie now, a gym bag slung over one broad shoulder. Was he actually working out just now? At midnight? As if sensing my gaze, he stopped dead in his tracks.

“Not true, but your money is in the mail. Nice to meet you, Mr. Winters.” His smile broadened as he stepped around Daisy to shake my hand. “Please, call me Jace. Nice to meet you, nicest girl in the school.” “You too.” There was no denying how incredibly good looking he was. And young. Really young, but maybe my age? He was dressed in a dark blue polo shirt and track pants with white stripes up the outside of his legs. There was a whistle hanging around his neck. “Come on,” Daisy said, heading back out into the hall. “We won’t take up any more of Lanie’s time. See you at lunch?”

I listened to Jace Carter do push-ups on the other side of my wall. I can do this. It’s six months. I will tutor him, get my Harvard letter, and never see him again. I grabbed the sandwich I bought earlier to finish it, but the door opened again without a knock. Jace filled the frame. He wore grey sweatpants with no shirt. That cut on his eyebrow made him look even more dangerous than he already is. He leaned on the doorframe and stared at me with an annoyed expression. “You are really here,” he said.

He couldn’t afford to lose sight of the plan. "Will your father be there?" Jace asked. "He will. But he won’t pull that stunt again." Elias paused. Jace looked away. He could already hear Victor’s voice from yesterday, dripping with contempt. But another part of him, one he was trying hard to silence, wanted this. Jace hesitated, then nodded. "Fine. I’ll go." --- That evening, Jace stood in his cramped apartment, staring at his bed where he’d laid out his only decent clothes. The same thrifted suit pants from the meeting. A worn white shirt. His old bartending vest. And the only shoes he owned that didn’t scream struggle.
