When we reach the main bay, the air is thick with tension and diesel. Jace stands near the landing platform, mud splattered up his arms, a cut above his eyebrow. Stevie’s beside him, tablet in hand, scanning the prisoners—four of them, bound and glaring. Wolf shifters, from the scent. Nightshade pack. “Good to see you alive,” I say, clapping Jace on the shoulder. “Wouldn’t miss it, boss,” he says with a crooked grin. “Though the trip got interesting.” I arch a brow. “Define ‘interesting.’”

She perched on the armchair nearest the window, tucking her legs beneath her, while Jace settled onto the couch opposite, his posture still sharp but less imposing. He leaned forward slightly, forearms resting on his knees. “Let’s start properly.” His voice was low, measured. “I’m Beta Jace…” He paused, as though weighing how much to reveal. “…of Blackthorn Pack. And, well—you’ve already met Alpha Julian Hale.” Her stomach clenched at the name. She kept her face carefully blank. “And you are?” Jace asked gently. Her fingers tightened against the armrest. “Kaelani.” She left it at that. No last name—because there wasn’t one, aside from the one she created to blend into the human world.

He fired his daggers, plunging them into the next two guards' throats before they could even get their weapons out. The last Executioner wielded a large iron mace, which struck the stone pillar where Jace had fallen, smashing it. However, Jace was long gone. He appeared out of the shadow of the mace itself, and wrapped his arm around the Executioner's neck and snapped it with a sharp, heavenly twist. The dungeon was quiet, except for the beat of the crystal heart, which was an unpleasant rhythm. Jace went to the end of the pit. He didn't only pierce the crystal. He concentrated the maximum amount of his celestial shadow-magic into his right fist, forming a sphere of dark, crushing gravity.

And for a moment, the predatory lust in his heart was replaced by something much more dangerous: respect. She dropped it with a gasp. Jace caught it before it hit the ground. “She’s using these. Drawing power from something ancient. I think Thorne found out. I think you just found proof of it.” Maren stared at him. He wasn’t just a stable boy. Not anymore. “Jace… what are you?” He met her gaze. And this time, there was no nervousness in his eyes. Only quiet steel. “I’m the last son of the Hollow Moon line. My family was slaughtered before I could shift. They thought they killed us all.”

After three rings, someone picked up the phone. “Jace?” I asked. I didn’t even give him time to greet me. Jace was my nephew, but we were of the same age. He was the Alpha of the Black Shadow Pack. “Are you okay? What’s going on?” He asked back. Jace was one of the two people who knew where I was. I made him give me his Alpha’s oath that he would not tell anyone. I was hoping he didn’t tell his Luna, but if he did, I hope they kept it a secret between them.
