Smoke thick. Cards on a table in the corner. Jax looks up first. “You look like you’re about to punch a wall,” he says. “Not in the mood.” “That’s never stopped you.” Rhea glances over from the bar. She reads rooms like a profession. “Something happened,” she says quietly. I don’t answer.

I murmur. And then we just stand there, staring at each other. Jackson clears his throat. “Yeah, well. We need to move. You find that other shifter, Jer?” My smile falls away at Jackson’s words, and I turn to him before freezing. Wow. He’s like a seriously hot, built, shaggy-haired version of Jeremy. “What do you mean, hot version?” Jeremy snarls. Which is when I realize I’ve been thinking out loud. Oops.

Chapter 196 Author’s POV. Alpha Jax was in his domain, his eyes blazing fire. His body was getting better, and he could now walk without stress, but sometimes he felt a lingering pain. He had tried his best to find Chloe, but to no avail. Just yesterday, his new beta had told him he saw someone who looked exactly like Ryan. Alpha Jax didn't want to believe it, thinking maybe his beta didn't know Ryan well enough. But his beta had known Ryan for a long time, since they lived in the same pack. His mind raced with how to confirm if what his beta said was true.

Once I send this text, Jackson will never let me out of his life again. Or maybe he will when he finds out that the Maverick he used to know is gone, replaced with a broken, darker version. His words burn through me, but I force myself to stay silent, focusing on any possible way to escape. Jack notices my silence and grins. “I just called Rachael, you know,” he continues casually, drawing my attention again. “I gave her a lifeline. Let’s wait and see if she takes it.” “Leave Rachael out of this, Jack,” I snap, desperation edging my voice. “You’ve already caused her enough pain.” He tilts his head, a mock expression of pity on his face. “Leave her out of this? His face serious and attentive. “I’m sure you know my mate is Renna,” I explained, my voice carrying a hint of pride. Memories of her flood my mind - her radiant smile, her gentle touch. The scent of wildflowers always seemed to follow her.
