I hit the video call button.
The ringing tone echoed once, then twice, before Grandma’s face appeared on-screen in full chaotic glory—curlers, glasses, oversized robe, and a judgmental frown only old age could perfect.
She squinted at the screen. “Why did you—”
“Jane,” I called, turning slightly. “Come here.”
Jane blinked at me, confused. “Why? What—”
“Just come, please,"
She hesitated, then moved closer, the lace of her dress brushing my arm. Her hand slipped naturally into mine, like it remembered the position it had been in all morning. She leaned in, cautious but compliant.
