Small, rectangular, wrapped in cream paper with a bronze ribbon. “Daniel…” “Just open it.” I unwrap carefully, my fingers trembling slightly. Beneath the paper is a book. Old leather binding. Gold lettering on the spine that catches the candlelight. Jane Eyre. First Edition. My breath catches. “This is…” “A 1847 first edition. Smith, Elder & Co. printing.” His voice is soft, almost vulnerable. “You told me that night, four years ago, that it was your favorite book. That your father used to read it to you before bed, doing all the voices. I’ve been looking for the right copy ever since.”

Her fingers trembled as she flipped to the familiar page where she always found his name. But the page was blank. Her breath caught in her throat. She turned another page but still, there was nothing. Then another. And another. It was empty. Panic surged through her veins. "No, no, no," she whispered, her voice shaking as she frantically turned the pages. However, her hands suddenly froze when she noticed something even more alarming. The edges of the pages were disintegrating. The parchment was crumbling and tiny specks of ash began falling onto her lap as if an invisible fire was consuming it.

The God of Fate was following the destiny of life, she only writes what is just and reasonable, one of the most powerful and revered individuals that no one wanted to defy. Although she already knew that she might not find anything, Zane continued on skimming through the empty pages until she reached the last part. It was as if she was imitating how a person would read a book. As if she could see a dot of ink when in fact everything her eyes landed on were slightly worn out pages that had their edges tinted with black. Like the curse. Just before she closes the book, a piece of folded paper suddenly fell from the pages and landed on the floor.

Everything had changed so quickly. She smiled and pulled out a chair. “Ready?” I nodded, my throat tight. “Good! Let’s see what you created yesterday.” I opened my folder with trembling fingers, revealing eight clean pages—no doodles or rough sketches like the ones William had glimpsed before. These were polished ideas. Mira’s eyes widened when she saw the first page. “Oh… wow.” My stomach flipped. “Is that… good or bad?” She looked at me, surprised by my uncertainty. “Jane, this is shockingly good.”
