The last page. Blank except for one line. In fresh ink. Black. Still wet at the edges. You forgot to write the ending. She stared at the sentence. The ink gleamed. She touched it. Wet. Real. She stood. Called Ethan's name. He answered from downstairs. Footsteps quick on the stairs. He appeared in the doorway. Saw her face. Crossed the room in three strides. "What happened?" She held out the pages. He read them silently. When he reached the last line his jaw tightened.

I had just finished journal 3 when I stopped. “What am I doing?” I whispered and dropped the journal, “No, no, no. Please no. Stop.” I dropped to my knees and started to collect all the pages. In a frantic hurry, I picked up each page as if they were about to fade away. Pages had landed everywhere. On the bed, behind the cupboard, under the tables, even in the bathroom. I picked up 575 pages. Each journal was a book of 192 pages… which meant one page was missing.

In my defense, they were not posted closely, and I was struggling to scroll up and down comparing them. I went back to the boyfriend's page, and found a few more of his pictures. I poured myself a neat brandy and sat comfortably on my couch and started studying him. His pictures to be more factual. I think we've already established that his eyes are quite stunning. It's like staring at glowing hot honey, under a scorching sun, if that makes any sense. His blonde curls looked soft enough to want to run my fingers through them. In one of the pictures he has stuck his tongue out mischievously, his eyes closed, with his hands cupping each side of his face.

If she were to stop to analyze it again, she would spend a whole day staring at the page, not reading or absorbing anything. But she couldn't help it much. The second page was equal to the first z the third as well. The fourth, the fifth to the sixth, even the twenty-seventh page was the same as the first, it frustrated her. She had passed through the corridors, endured all that litany of her mother and sisters, had to remain as calm as possible in the face of that scenario in which she did not have many memories of what would happen before the meeting with Lord Kim. All this following the idea of "the book will tell you the story", so that in the end the pages are white.

“For you.” I could hardly believe it. Flipping through the composition book, I could make out pages upon pages filled with neat handwriting, what looked like ten chapters worth of reading, and even… a couple of smutty scenes. My cheeks warmed as I flipped to a random page and read something about the dragon turning into a man, and…

Why rip out only one page? I read the numbers in the corners of the pages on either side, noting that they took page sixty-three. So I turn to the contents page at the start of the book. I skim down the list, until I find it. Song of The Sea Maiden ……………………… p63 The sea maiden. The beach. The dreams. The answers are right in front of me. I just can’t see them yet.

“At least there isn’t any danger here “, Jane retorted, still looking around. She was looking through a stack of books on a cabinet like her life depended on it. I began to question the sense in even coming here in the first place. I didn’t know what I had hoped to find and Chloe was right; it was reckless. And I couldn’t afford to be reckless, especially not now. I was about to sink a little into despair when Jane called out. “Look I found something.” She held up a little black book that was almost identical to the one I found in my father’s study. There was only more gibberish inside. Both of us froze instantly as if in sync. There were sounds of footsteps coming from the front porch.

Then, carefully, she picked it up. She opened the first page. No dates. No titles. Just words—raw, almost chaotic. Some pages were covered in neat, cursive writing. Others had half-sketched faces, a few incomplete portraits. One looked like a child curled up on the floor. Another, resembled her. Zara’s eyes moved across the lines. “The house applauds perfection, but no one hears the screams behind the applause.” “Every time I breathe, I feel like I’m stealing air from someone more worthy.”
