JANE'S POV My entire body trembled, and I couldn't see the faces in front of me. Everything seemed like a complete blur, but I could hear Marius's voice... He seemed so completely distant... But now I could see the torment in his eyes. He ran a hand through his curls and sat down slowly, motioning for me to do the same. There was a small fire burning in a metal bowl on the table. Beside it, a leather-bound journal sat, its pages partially torn. “I didn’t know who else to call,” he began. “You’re the only person I trust now.” I didn’t speak. I only nodded, urging him to speak on. By now, I was restless, the air around us was tensed.

Kerry stood over Jane as she turned the page in her history book, casting a shadow over the pages. She cleared her throat and glanced up at him. "Do you mind? You're blocking my light." He stood back and pulled out the chair next to her, glancing around the library as if he may see the lycan. Jane read over her chapter, trying her hardest to block out the eyes over her shoulder. She felt like she sat underneath a microscope with eyes judging her. She knew that wasn't true. Kerry seemed like a nice guy, but it made Jane feel scrutinized.

The woman was once again alone, to wander the nothing endlessly. That’s where the story stops, and the pages become blank. Six blank pages before the story continues with a new tale of a reincarnated Athena and her journey to find her mates. This pattern continues four more times, where the last five to seven pages are blank before moving onto the next story. No spell I have tried has been able to reveal what is written on those blank pages, but I’m sure whatever is written there is important. I really should just give the book to Jamari and see if she can read the pages that are blank.

Frowning, I remove its contents, and my eyes grew. “First edition of Jane Eyre!” I say with excitement, then I blanch. Why was I excited about this? I look up at him and see the smile forming on his face. “I knew it,” he says and sits down on the chair next to my bed. “I knew you would remember your favourite book, even if you forgot everything else. Literature used to be your sanctuary.”

Inside: sepia-toned photographs, a handful of ink-faded letters, and at the bottom, a dog-eared copy of Jane Eyre with a broken spine from years of opening it to the same passages. I picked up the book. The cover was worn at the corners, the spine creased in three places where it had been opened most often. I turned it over in my hands and felt the familiar weight of it, this book I had first read at fifteen and had returned to every year until I was twenty-two and had not opened since because there had been no room in Josiah's house for the kind of woman who read Jane Eyre and meant it. My phone lit up on the nightstand.

I knew who it was from the second I saw it, my heart did a traitorous flip as I carried it upstairs, glancing over my shoulder like Mirabel might appear at any moment. I slipped into our room, locked the door, and tore it open on my bed. Inside was a small wooden box. Nestled in velvet lay a rare first-edition copy of Jane Eyre, the cover worn but beautiful, it pages edged in gold. My breath caught. I’d mentioned it once during the holidays, of how it was my ultimate book boyfriend fantasy in physical form. Rhys had remembered. I opened it carefully. Tucked inside the front cover was a handwritten note on heavy cream paper, his strong, decisive script unmistakable.

She watched as Zayne flipped opened pages. “You need to read this” zayne handed her the book with a page wide opened. Even though Quinn was scared, she took the book from Zayne. Her eyes popped out on seeing the heading on the page that was open, “GREY WOLVES WITH BLACK DOTS” And curiously, her eyes roamed the content of the page. Zayne watched as her eyes moved quickly on the book. He wasn’t hearing any word from her, but he knew she was reading it in her heart as her lips moved slowly without a word.

Olivia dropped Jane Eyre in front of him. “I told you I don't like reading,” Tristan declined, shoving the book back to her.
