Yves promptly echoed, "Ben, Sean's right. We've got the search covered. I'll keep watch here for you. Take a moment to tend to your wounds and rest."

Viviana stands with the dagger held tightly in her hand and walks towards Harper who's laying on the ground. He tries to crawl away from her when he sees her coming towards him but he's to weak and his body's still fighting the shift. "Harper, baby, you need to call to the fae's" I plead with him needing him to save himself. "Please baby" I beg. A sharp pain pierces my side instantly weakening Niro. "Shut the fuck up" Harper's mom growls as she pulls a silver dagger from my side. Slumping forward I catch a glimpse of two familiar wolves among the rogues and I feel a small sense of relief wash over me.

I looked at the tablet he dropped by my side. "Fuck!" I picked it up as I tried to watch what the video was all about. I watched as Harper dragged her hair first. I listened to the confessions that were made by Harper in that video. Harper had the intention of killing her, and that was the perfect time. She was really crazy! My fist tightened as she pushed Diana down the stairs. She was really heartless! I watched everything as she pushed my wife down the stairs. I heard she was at this hospital as well.

And I realize something that changes everything. I don't want Harper. I want Brynlee—damaged, difficult, frustrating Brynlee who came back wrong but came back to me anyway. I want the woman who survived six months in hell and still fought to get home to our family. I want the mate who's struggling to figure out how to be herself again in a world that doesn't feel safe anymore. I pull my hand away from Harper's, the movement gentle but definitive. "I can't," I say quietly.

The night air was thick with smoke, ash, and the lingering scent of burned metal. Lila, Cade, and Adrian stumbled out of the ruins of the base, their lungs aching from the heat and suffocating smoke. Sparks still flared from scattered debris, creating a chaotic staccato of light that flickered across their exhausted faces. Lila sank to the ground, her chest heaving, legs trembling. She had survived—but only barely. Harper’s residual energy still pulsed within her, faint but dangerous, like a coiled snake ready to strike.

Harper sat in her car outside the office building for twenty minutes before going in. She had walked back from the bridge, gone straight to the parking garage, and sat in the driver's seat staring at the concrete wall in front of her like it had answers written on it. Her father was alive. She kept saying it in her head and it kept not fully landing. Like a word repeated until it lost its meaning. Alive. Alive. Robert Wells was alive in Vermont and had been reading her published work and had named her before she was born after a writer he loved.

The next morning, ignoring his stern warnings, I took two painkillers and ran straight toward the heart of the ruins. Sebastian told me that if I went out there, I wouldn't make it back alive. Honestly, he wasn't the only one who thought so. During those four years, everyone assumed I wouldn't survive to see the next day. But I couldn't die before I found Damian. By nightfall, I staggered out from the smoke, carrying two children in my arms. Sebastian grabbed the kids to rush them into triage, then glanced over at me as I collapsed onto a cot, barely alive.

~Tanner’s POV~ I hear the sound of something boiling in a pot, and I smell something like lavender? I open my eyes, where am I? “OH shit! HARPER!” I pitched my body upright, banging my head on… the ceiling? What the hell? “TANNER! You're okay!” I didn’t even see Harper coming before she threw her arms around my neck. “Tanner, I have been so worried about you. I was afraid you were never going to wake up!” She began to cry. Suddenly, a strange humanoid creature starts smacking her hands away from me. “Okay, Okay, OKAY! I’m going! You know I have been waiting days for him to wake up!” Harper said to the creature. It came up to feel my head and hand me something to drink.

“The kids never even appreciated your efforts after all these years you took care of them. Respect wasn’t even something they gave you so what does she mean by abandoning the kids?” Tessa sneered coldly, “If I tell you they gathered these people for a stampede will you believe me?” Dr. Anya’s mouth fell open, “What?” Tessa pointed towards the screen. “More than half of the people here are males. They don’t look like they are here for help but to cause trouble.” Mark spoke up this time, “We know you have a cure already and that is why you have locked yourself up inside. Are you hoping to be a capitalist and squeeze everyone dry till there is nothing left?”

If Jane was right about them, I don't think I would have the strength to walk on my own two feet. I ask Harper more about what Harvey said while I was in the shower, and I find no faults; it's all very similar to the things I've been told — means to keep their secret, to stay safe while Jane is still at large, and ways to protect our family and her friends. It becomes even more obvious that Harper is digesting the colossal truth about the supernatural better than I did, although, a werewolf didn't shift in front of her like Abby did to me. Harper has yet to see such a startling thing.
