Jane?” “They’re safe,” he said quickly. “Selene and the others are gathering the survivors.” Relief washed over me, but I was too weak to react. My limbs wouldn’t move. "Help! Can anyone hear us?" Christine shouted, her hands cupping her mouth. Only the birds in the palm trees flew up in response. She turned to stare at the waves gently lapping at the shore. No sign of any other survivors. Christine sat on the sandy beach, hugging her knees to her body. Chase walked over to her and sat beside her. "You okay?" he asked. She nodded. "I guess." He put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her in for a hug. She placed her head on his shoulder. He wished he could kiss her and tell her everything would be okay, but there were no guarantees.

Dante held me as if I might vanish, but I no longer had the strength to push him away. Professor Shaw came to my side. “Aria, can you hear me?” I looked at her through the blur. “My baby…” Her expression changed, but her voice stayed steady. “We’re taking you to the institute medical center now.” As they lifted me onto the stretcher, Dante tried to follow. Professor Shaw stopped him with one look. “You had your chance to protect her.” The last thing I saw before darkness took me was Dante standing in the hall, covered in my blood, while the wedding ring box lay open at his feet.

"Harper! Take me with you! Please! They will kill me!" Harper looked at her father. She looked at the man cowering on the floor. She remembered the noodle shop. Mr. Evans standing with a cleaver, ready to die for her. That was her father. This man was just a sperm donor. "Goodbye, Richard," Harper said. She turned around and walked out the door with Sebastian. Behind them, Victoria’s screams were drowned out by the sound of the safe being drilled open and the roar of the fire consuming the building.
