Secrets of Desire
The coffee scalded my tongue, it was bitter and perfect.
Footsteps thudded on the stairs, light and quick. And then we could hear a woman's laugh. I turned just as she appeared in the doorway.
Blonde, willowy, bare feet, his Columbia Law T-shirt drowning her frame. My stomach dropped.
“Jules, the shower’s—” She stopped. Her eyes widened. “Oh. You didn’t say we had company.”
Julian didn’t look at her. “This is Evie. My stepsister.”
The word stepsister landed like a slap. The blonde, girlfriend, hookup, whatever, smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’m Lauren. I’d shake but—” She lifted the towel turban on her head. “—post-shower chaos.”
