Outside, day stretched luxuriously into evening, the way it always did on warm summer nights. "So where do we start after twenty years? Jason began. "Twenty," Lola repeated. "Are you sure? She said, making it sound as though she was just working it out. "Twenty-four years. My Goodness," Jason exclaimed. "And now you're married. Any children?" I said to Lucas, pouring us both coffee that tastes like ash. Lucas frowned. “His family?” “Yes. His parents. Where he grew up. Childhood connections. The woman he almost married before me. He said, a small smile still on his lips.
