Jealousy came first. He had no word for it, had never needed one, had never had occasion to develop the concept because the concept required the possibility of someone wanting what was yours and taking it, and nothing in Eden had ever been structured around that possibility. But his body knew it instinctively, the cold-hot rush of it, the specific sick quality of recognizing a thing that should not have happened and knowing it had happened and knowing he could not unmake it. Rage came second.

Despite his efforts to quell the rising tide of jealousy that threatened to consume him, he found himself unable to look away, his heart pounding with a mixture of rage and hurt. She was his woman, damn it! How dare she lay her hands on another man, especially in his presence and in such an intimate manner? The sight of her examining the young man's muscular chest ignited a firestorm of possessiveness within him, leaving him reeling with a sense of betrayal. At first, Zakariah tried to reign in his emotions, to maintain a facade of composure in the face of his rising fury. But as the situation escalated, he found himself unable to contain his rage any longer.

Single. I feel no hot surge of jealousy. I dissect that emotion, as I have all others. Jealousy implies a fear of loss, a recognition that another’s claim might supersede your own. I do not fear. “And since I’m neither of those things, you don’t have any claim over me. Which makes all these irritating actions you keep showing… completely pointless.” And, suddenly, he took a slow step forward, closing just enough distance for his presence to press a little harder into the space between us. “If I told you that I don’t like seeing you with other men especially low-ranked ones, would that change anything?” His stare didn’t waver. “Like I said, I only get mad because I’m seeing how easily you’re able to be comfortable with others. A wave of pure, toxic rage, bitter annoyance, and sickening, hollow jealousy rushed through me, so intense I thought I might throw up right there on the carpet. I clenched my hands into tight, white-knuckled fists, my fingernails digging into my palms until it hurt, staring at that sliver of light with absolute, burning hatred.

He didn’t know why he felt that way. Tyler took a deep breath. He picked up his phone and opened the browser. He searched about human feelings. Tyler laughed a little when he read the result of his search.
