Bennett— a chirpy woman in her eighties who wore weird glasses and could go on forever about her love for books. Ashlyn once had to sit through her session on how books brought one to an entirely different universe and could easily make one feel better, letting their mind slip away from their current predicament— a perfect distraction in her opinion. Ashlyn of course begged to differ. After that entire lecture of one hour, instead of feeling peaceful, the desire to destroy the world became stronger within her. Maybe that’s why, Leah went along with Mrs. Bennett. Both of them were dreamy and had their heads in the cloud. They made Ashlyn roll her eyes.

I take a step forward and then turn back heading for my small cot. Ashley calls out, “Maddon, this way, you’re free to come out.” I pick up the thin mat they call a mattress and pull out the tattered and barely holding together washed out pink journal. I walk up to the cell door and step out, “thank you Queen Ashley,” I bow my head to her and extend the book towards her. She looks at it, “Maddon, what is that.”

“Nah. It’s her day off. She’ll probably come in anyway though.” Dr. Rachel Miller was a gifted surgeon who used to volunteer with Doctors Without Borders. Her selfless and giving nature was what led her to be at the wrong place at the wrong time while helping out at an Ethiopian refugee camp. A jihadist terrorist group exploded a magical bomb in the center of the camp, killing hundreds. Rachel was the only one to survive, awakening with the extraordinary ability to heal any diseases and injury.
