“Yes! She tripped me! I’m hurt! I need help!” Jessica’s voice was loud, desperate, every ounce of performance honed for maximum effect. She clutched her arm as if it had been injured, wobbling slightly for dramatic emphasis.
Atlas’s eyes widened, and he rushed forward, concern etched across his features. “Calliope, what happened?”
I opened my mouth, trying to explain, but the words caught in my throat. Any explanation would seem defensive, possibly even aggressive. I couldn’t risk saying something that made Jessica’s act seem plausible, but I also couldn’t reveal the truth about the stalker—or the pregnancy.
