Apparently, I, too, respond well to structure and the promise of food. Inside Scoma’s, the smell hits me like a warm, buttery slap — garlic, seafood, sizzling heaven. My stomach growls loud enough to embarrass me. My mouth waters. Actively. Jinx doesn’t break posture, though his nose works overtime, darting through the air like it’s conducting its own investigation. His eyes stay glued to Alejandro, sheer willpower and strong training keeping him in line. “You’re torturing the poor thing,” I whisper. Jinx immediately collapses onto the floor with a dramatic sigh the moment we sit.

She’d dug deep for that sexy, flirty woman that Zeke (no, not Zeke, Silver) had responded to, the woman that she’d once been and lost, and given the three men a wicked grin. “Thick as my wrist,” she’d drawled, heart thumping as she wondered if she was going too far, “and juicy enough to run off my chin.” A few seconds of silence. And then – “Holy Lord,” Jinx had breathed as the other two had laughed long and loud. “Clearly we shouldn’t let the prim little blouse fool us, huh? I grab a slice of pizza and pat the couch. Jinx rests his chin on my knee, quivering with restraint, watching, waiting. His nose in the pizza, puppy eyes on Alejandro.

He wanted to starve me for a few days to see if it would improve his business. "I got full marks on my exam today. I was so happy that I showed the paper to Mom, but when she saw me smiling, she slapped me right away. I will never smile again. I'm sorry. "Siena didn't do well on her exam. She said I broke her pen, but I only touched it. I didn't mean to. She locked me out and made me stand outside. I'm sorry. I won't do it again."

Reminding herself to dial down the bitch vibe, she shook the second man’s hand now, offered him a small smile. “I’m Jinx,” he said, his green eyes somehow cool and sultry at the same time. She stared into them, feeling like she was looking at a crisp, sunny spring morning. “We’re glad you’re here. Maybe you’ll do me the honor of doing my next tattoo?”
