Her voice screeched. The sudden outburst caused me to hold my ears in discomfort. It's like her voice shattered my ears drum, and I was bleeding from my ears. Falling to the ground, I curled up in heap, my whole body was in pain, but I wasn't wounded, it was Amber's... Whatever they were doing to her, I was feeling it too. My words did nothing but enrage him further, and he started to run towards me, hands outstretched ready to place them around my neck. But, before he could reach me, the familiar sounds of large wings flapping in the air met my ears. Fallon and I both looked up, Thale’s red dragon suspended above us. He exhaled flames in Fallon’s direction, although missing him so as to make sure I was not caught in the cross-fire. I needed to get further away.

“You’re not alone. You’re not trapped. I’m right here.” He shook his head. “It’s pulling everything inside me. Rowan you don’t understand. This is something else. I can’t breathe.” She stepped even closer, ignoring the heat that tried to push her back. “Let me anchor you. Just look at me.” He lifted his hand but the dark flame jumped from his palm like a living thing. It arched into the air and split open in the shape of wings made of fire. They stretched wide behind him, crackling with heat so intense the air rippled.

I can see the faint outline of what looks like wings spread behind her. Wings of fire that seem to take the shape of a heart… A piercing scream rips through the air as her power increases tenfold and surges into the sky, emanating in waves around her. I see the swirls of the flames behind her move before I see a tiny part of her left wing snap and shrivel into embers of ash. It’s too blinding to look at, and I’m forced to avert my gaze.

Then he clears his throat to speak, and when he does, his voice is low and authoritative, eerily reminiscent of his father, and his words give me déjà vu. Around her, elements that I now recognized swirled. Fire, ice, storm, shadow, wind, earth. The six. As my fingers brushed against the edge of the central flame, the voice spoke to me

“But you’ll be gone.” And then I moved. Faster than his eyes could track, faster than the witches could react. My fire took over. No more compromises. No more second chances. No more mercy. I felt it before I moved. The shift. My body became flame incarnate, no longer flesh but vengeance wrapped in heat. My wings of fire unfurled behind me—massive, burning brighter than anything I had ever conjured before. I wasn’t walking anymore. I was gliding, a being of wrath.
