I leaned in close, whispering, “What's the matter, Jake? Aren't you ready?”
He sat there, speechless, unable to respond. Finally, he cleared his throat to speak.
“It's a strange feeling,” Jake said, his brow furrowed in thought. “I'm happy to have the chance to stand up for what's right, but I'm sad to think about all the pain and suffering that comes with it.”
He looked up at me, his eyes filled with sorrow. I placed a hand on his shoulder, offering what comfort I could.
“You'll be fine,” I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
