And that says a lot about Nolan.” Elijah exhaled a long line of smoke, his voice smooth. “You expected him to ignore his Luna forever? Did you really believe that a beauty like her can be ignored. Don’t get me wrong, but living in the same house with her, seeing her beauty, and getting to know her… it would have been hard on any man.”

All of this is a whole different kind of strange to me, but I am so focused on trying to get Gabe to come back to reality that I don't really think much about it. "Sir, shouldn't we be taking him to a hospital?" I ask the man who is currently testing the limits of exactly what my car can do. Of course Christopher Henry Jameson—also known as Beast- wasn't the average man. He stood 6'5" and weighed three hundred and two pounds. He didn't like the extra three pounds. He rather liked being in the two hundred weight range even if it was by just one or two pounds. Regardless, there wasn't an ounce of fat on his perfect body. Beast was muscles on top of muscles, yet not hulking like some of the others that worked in the Marine Corps division assigned to The Department of Home Land Security, or better known as DHS. If he forced me to crawl in the garbage to get him, I was going to be pissed. My gaze locked on the sliver of light as the guy emerged from the back of the dumpster onto a small patch of dirt. What a fucking idiot. He was no more than five foot eight, not even coming to my shoulders. I flicked my wrist, causing the silver ring on my middle finger to glint in the low light. “Please,” he begged while putting his hands in the air. “Just take it.” He held out his trembling hands to me, weeping rivers of tears. “I just needed something to eat.”

I’m breathing hard and shallow as my eyes again sweep the small playground they have. “He’s inside with Mr. Beck. He won’t stop crying.” Mrs. Dawson gives me an unappreciative look down her hawk-like nose. I don’t even thank her as I hurry inside. I can hear the hiccups and sniffles of Nick as I come into the main room. He’s sitting on Mr. Beck’s lap, cradled in a tight hug as Mr. Beck sings to him and rocks him back and forth. Mr. Beck, who is in his mid fifties, is the perfect man for the job of taking care of little children. His calm behavior and kind nature has the most unruly children behaving like angels. Sammy ~ “Hey babe, not so loud; dad does not know about that part, yet. Here is to Becca and her mysterious man.” Becca ~ “There is no such thing as a mysterious man! He is Joshua Stephens! He is a stripper! He is a creep! He is a liar!” Sammy is smiling at me…she turns to Johno as he takes his seat next to her. Lucky the creep is not with him! I wasn’t too panicked to miss the way Jonah’s cheeks flushed at his little misstep. “You’re the best,” she said sweetly. She turned to me with a smile. “You haven’t officially met. This is our Luna, Penelope. Luna, this is our dedicated pack doctor and all-round wizard, Jonah.” Jonah looked at me, wide, innocent eyes somehow filled with knowledge and wisdom beyond his years. He smiled and dipped his chin. “It’s an honor to meet you, Luna,” he said. “You’ve already met my brother; I’m Jared’s little brother.”

Now they send drones. Rowan drops them before they breach the airspace. Clean EMP pulses. He leaves the wreckage at the edge of the wheat for them to collect. A message. Try harder. “Mother.” Jonah. Six years old, barefoot, holding bread. He’s supposed to be with Lyana. Instead he’s here, in the war room. “You should be sleeping,” I say. He shakes his head and holds the bread out. “For him.” Eli. Seventy years old, by the fire, wrapped in blankets. He hasn’t said much since the binding. Just watches. Holds.
