Laughter echoed between bites of food. Josh sat alone at the adjacent table, earphones in, lazily poking at his food. His hair was its usual unkempt mess, and his uniform, unsurprisingly, was unironed. I caught him flicking his lips with his fingers in that weird way he sometimes did—like a half-asleep toddler. What was he even doing? Suddenly, I remembered something. “Hey, guys, I almost forgot! You know Finlay, right?” I whispered. “Yes, why? Did he pull off something big again?” Ritchelle exaggerated the word big, dramatically pouting her lips.

Their son, Terence Stroud, wanted to visit an amusement park abroad and had gone along. She knew Joshua hated being disturbed during work trips. They hadn't exchanged any calls or messages for the past two days, so he had to be busy. Just then, her phone buzzed. A message from Winter's half-sister, Jessica Lynch, popped into view. Winter opened it with trembling fingers, and her breath caught. In the photo, Jessica had an arm around Terence as they smiled for the camera and made heart gestures. Joshua, strikingly handsome as always, sat beside them.

The first thing that caught my eye. Joshua, who was about seven or eight years old, was at the photo studio, accompanied by three or four-year-old Tomas and Marlon. This is the first photo I took after my business started to pick up a bit. In the photo, Joshua looked at Hugh with confusion, probably having heard the photographer say "smile and laugh". Someone beautiful with golden-haired, curves that could make a monk sin… Yeah, I wasn’t about to tell him that. Josh’s eyes widened again. “Wait, bro... You are smiling again!” He dropped his snack bag like it was evidence. “Nope. I must be dreaming.” He pinched his arm hard, then gasped dramatically. “Nope, still here. Still smiling. This is creepy.”

I couldn't help but gasp at what Jakob and I had stumbled upon. "Impressive tool you've got there, my friend!" He grinned in response. "So, he was really a doctor," Jakob commented as we sifted through the pictures. In one of the images, Josh is dressed in blue scrubs, his grin radiating for the camera. Some pictures are too shadowed to discern his demeanor, while others show him interacting with patients. Jakob scrolled down further, and our jaws dropped at the sight of the next photo. In this particular snapshot, Josh had his arm casually draped around Megan, planting a tender kiss on her cheek. Their intimacy was undeniable.

The way he curls against Mike during story time, completely trusting, completely safe. The dimple in his left cheek when he laughs, the cowlick that makes his hair stick up no matter how much I try to smooth it down, everything is worth capturing, every moment is precious and I save to save it. "You're being weird," Mike observes, watching me snap pictures of Josh eating breakfast. "I know." "Good weird or bad weird?" "I don't know." Automatically I start coughing and Josh starts laughing patting me on the back. I can’t help but feel a little jealous that Josh is giving his attention to that Anthony bloke. He’s a dick. “Come on, it’s not that bad”, he says pulling his long hair behind his ear.

“An astronaut? My goodness, Josh is truly remarkable.” “He also loves reading stories. He’s already fluent, and often he teaches his friends to read along with him.” Felicia clapped her hands, her face lighting up with delight. “Oh my God, my nephew is amazing! Do you have any photos or videos of him? Maybe when he performed, or when he read stories to his classmates?” Without a second thought, Althea pulled out her phone, scrolling through the gallery for pictures and videos of Josh. She handed it over for Felicia and Kate to watch together.

He was gesturing like he was telling the funniest story ever, with a beer bottle in hand and that grin of someone who’d already had three or four drinks. Josh Carter was the spitting image of the rich, spoiled heir I’d known for years: tall, with messy brown hair he never bothered to fix, bright green eyes that always seemed to be laughing at something, even when there wasn’t a punchline, and an expensive suit that hung a bit crooked from how much he’d already drunk.

Helena burst out laughing so loudly that she had to let go of him to hold her stomach, which hurt from laughing so hard. “Hahaha! Coward! Come try again!” She leaned toward him, pouting her lips wrinkled by makeup. “Kiss, kiss here on grandma! Grandma's makeup is beautiful today, isn't it? Come on, give your ‘grandson’ a little kiss!” Josh cowered in the corner of the car, traumatized, while Lucas just turned up the radio to drown out the madness in the back seat.
