July remained, hovering near the stairs like she wasn't sure if she should stay or go. I gestured for her to come closer. "Thank you. For making contact with your mom. For bringing us this information. I know that couldn't have been easy." "I just want her back," July said, voice small. "The real her. In her own body. Living her own life."

It was, like most human things, something in between. July arrived and with it the particular quality of a settled summer — not the tentative warmth of June, which still carried traces of spring's uncertainty, but the full committed heat of a city in summer that had stopped apologizing for itself. Aria liked this quality of July. She liked the commitment of it, the way it made no promises about cooling and instead simply was what it was.

July came in loud. Not the pack — the pack had its own summer rhythm, unhurried and expansive, the long light evenings and the open windows and the particular ease of a community that had done its winter work and was now in the season of the rewards of it. The loudness was the world outside the territory — the heat that came over the ridge with genuine conviction, the creek running fast with the mountain melt, the birds who had been conducting increasingly elaborate arguments in the trees above the east road since dawn.

It was a hot summer night in July. The people of Perkins were either outside their homes, trying to catch a stray breeze or populating any of the clubs and bars downtown. It was a sleepy little town, but it came alive on days like these, when there was little else to do than to watch the twinkling stars outside or party till sunrise.
