The late afternoon brought a subtle shift in energy. As the sun began its descent toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of orange and violet, Elias appeared with firewood and matches. “Closing ritual,” he announced, without excessive ceremony. “Each of us writes what we want to leave behind. Or what we want to promise going forward. Places we’ve been, conversations we’ve had, little moments I remember. And pages for you to fill in your own thoughts, your own dreams.” He opened it to a random page. “See? ‘Describe the feeling of standing under the summer rain after a long, hot day.’ Or, ‘If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be and why?’ Just things to make you smile.

Sumi said while closing the door. Swara was still sitting on the ground and crying. Life is painful and messed up. It gets complicated at the worst of times, and sometimes you have no idea where to go or what to do. Lots of time, people just let themselves get lost. But we have to keep trying. We have to push through all that hurt, work past all the memories that are haunting us. Sometimes the things that hurt us are the things that make us the strongest. And even if it hurts, never stop living.

"Something you want but cannot have." Mr. Vance wrote it on the board in clean, unhurried letters, then set the marker down and turned to face us like he had just said something completely ordinary.
