A small, insignificant object, but the skin on my palm reacts like I’m holding something that could explode. The black satin ribbon grazes the back of my fingers. Déjà vu stings. The perfume box at the office. The bouquet at home. My life really loves running the same joke on repeat. “Mommy, is that a present?” Poppy asks, delighted, taking half a step closer. “For Mommy.” I force my mouth into a thin curve. “Not necessarily the exciting kind.” Truth: I know it’s going to be very exciting, just in the wrong category.

The note simply read: “Heard you had fun. -J” We ate the drone-pie under the twin moons, laughing, our home once again safe from the terrible, encroaching threat of making sense.

Someone’s hungry!” Morgan jokes and runs back inside the house and comes back with one pie in each of her hands. “I made them especially for your mother.”
