Ramon’s heart hammered in his chest. He had mocked the idea of curses earlier, but now terror flooded his veins. He gripped a piece of jagged metal scavenged from the wreck, holding it like a knife. His mind raced: If they come, what can I do? The thought of fighting something unseen left him cold, but surrendering wasn’t an option either. His fear turned to anger, a fragile shield. “If they want us, let them come,” he growled, though his shaking hands betrayed the bravado.
