The sea remembers.” The current tightens around my arms, the way a child clings to a mother’s wrist. For a moment I almost feel loved.

It was a picture taken when Clayton proposed to me. That summer, I said to him, “Clayton, if you ever decide to propose, promise me there will be fireworks. “Our love should be as bright and beautiful as fireworks.” In the end, when Clayton proposed, he set off fireworks across the entire city for me. Under the fireworks, we made wishes to cherish each other and grow old together. However, we forgot that fireworks were fleeting by nature. After the brief, brilliant display, nothing remained. Clayton remembered that day, too.

My voice sounds… wrong. One of them tries to run. The ocean doesn’t allow it. Water coils around their bodies like living chains. They struggle violently. One shouts, “Take the kid!” The man holding my son tries to pull him away. That’s when something inside me The ocean rises in my throat and I sing The siren call tears out of me like a storm. The sound fills the entire building. It isn’t music. The men freeze instantly. Their eyes widen with pure terror. The air vibrates as the call grows louder.
