The Justiciar didn't drop into the hole. He raised a heavy-caliber rifle, the barrel glowing with a sickly, necrotic violet light. He aimed directly at Leo’s chest.
"Papa!" Leo shrieked.
Kael moved. He didn't have his wolf to propel him anymore, only the frantic, terminal momentum of a father. He lunged across the narrow space, his human body colliding with Leo, shoving the boy into the deepest shadow of the lead-lined corner.
