From the back, a shadow moved unnaturally. It resolved into a student who had been standing silently the whole time. His eyes were deep pools of black, reflecting the room in reverse. His voice echoed, though he hadn’t moved his lips: “You cannot stop it. You cannot reach him. You’ve already lost.”
The council froze. Maeve stepped forward, shard raised, and whispered: “You’re lying. Cade is still alive. And I’ll find him.”
