My knees buckled, and before I knew what was happening, Kai’s arms were around me, steadying me.
“No,” I whispered, weakly trying to push him away. “Don’t. Don’t do this.”
But he didn’t let go.
“Let it out,” he murmured, his voice so soft it barely registered. “I’m here.”
And just like that, the dam broke.
I sobbed into his chest, the grief and frustration pouring out of me in waves. My hands clutched at his shirt, my tears soaking the fabric.
