CHASING MONSTERS
Abel’s name hung in the council chamber like smoke.
Ronan finished speaking, jaw clenched, shoulders set, refusing to show the grief sitting under his ribs.
“Collapsed the foundation,” he said. “Mages brought the whole place down. We got the women and kids out, my King.” His throat worked. “Abel stayed at the rear. He didn’t make it.”
Silence.
Even the candles seemed to hold their breath.
Across the table, Kofi, Ryder, and Harris looked like they’d rather be anywhere but here, hunters in the heart of a wolf stronghold, smelling of dust and battle and someone else’s blood. But they stood straight, and they didn’t lie. I respected that.
