And do come to visit us,” Sister Margaret was saying with tears in her eyes. “You never told us your full name,” Mother Katherine intervened. “It’s Katherine Thornton,” she answered and heard a general audible gasp. “As in the famous Thorntons?” Sister Julie asked her hand covering her mouth in wonder.

“That does not make it less insane.” “No,” Viktor clasped his hands behind his back as we walked. “But the Romanov bloodline has no direct heir after Nikolai. The council has been worried about that for years.” “I gathered that from the part where they found a wolfless woman from a disgraced family and decided she would make a convenient uterus,” I said, and Viktor’s jaw tightened. “That was not how everyone viewed the arrangement,” he said, but he did not argue. My eyes blinked, my voice shutters. But instead, he began telling me a story. A story about a woman named Katherine. A man named Baron, and two little girls. At first, I didn't understand why he was telling me any of it. Then he said something that made my entire body stiffen. “Katherine had a daughter before Elara.” My lips parted. “She named her Helena.” I stared at him, then he continued. “Katherine loved that child. She was everything to her. But when Helena was still a baby, Katherine discovered that Baron had been involved with dangerous people.”

Tristan said loudly, “You have competition, Conrad. Better work harder.” At this the brothers laughed again, and Conrad muttered something under his breath. Just then a pretty brown-haired and green-eyed young woman came to their table. Sakura got up and gave her a hug, which caused the brothers to wonder who this woman was. “Hey,” Sakura said. “Hey,” the woman replied. Then she moved over to hug Mary. “I’ll definitely come over tonight to try on that dress. Peter and Richard are arriving this afternoon, right?” Mary nodded. Then she turned to the brothers. “Boys,” she said, “this is Katherine Hodge. She’s my maid of honor, and Michael’s stepmom, by the way.”

Lord Bennett announced and Immediately, people bowed as we made our way in. “My Lord this way please” Lord Bennett said, ushering me into the new chamber where Katherine sat, waiting close to the window. “You’re back, you’re alive!” She exclaimed, walking towards me as her smile seized. Her eyes traveled down to our entwined hands as she moved backwards. “Who’s she?” She asked and immediately Morgana let go of my hand and walked forward. “Morgana” she said while Katherine smirked. “Am lady Katherine the king’s betrothed” she announced boastfully as Morgana chuckled.

"What's she actually going there to do on the threshold?" Katherine paused for a moment. "She's going to meet her real mother." The room went silent. "Annitore's mother," Katherine clarified. "Ahnika. The woman who gave birth to her centuries ago." Annie felt the floor tilt beneath her.
