The bloodied tip of a blade had thrust through my chest. Drops of blood fell, one by one. "Mayor Bowser."

She wanted the way his laugh loosened the tightness in her chest she hadn’t known was there. Saying no to this wasn’t saying no to him. It still felt like a kind of betrayal in her ribs. She sank into the chair, the wood creaking softly, and let the darker possibilities crawl in around the edges. Better to name them than pretend they didn’t exist. *Kael dead* came first because, of course, it did. Dead in some nameless pass, blood soaking Nightfang’s snow, cut down by a cultist or an old enemy or sheer, stupid bad luck. Nightfang’s council delivering the news with gravity, Blackmoon’s hall filling with candlelight and whispers.

Clifford’s POV I stormed up to the third floor with ten of my men. The moment we reached it, gunfire erupted. Bullets whizzed past us— they’d been waiting. I gritted my teeth as one grazed my side, pain burning deep, but I kept firing back. Within seconds, only two of my men were left, both wounded. When the noise died down, the floor was littered with bodies—none of Horacio’s men survived. I scanned the area and froze when I spotted the elevator closing at the far end of the hall.

He was the most dramatic fuck I've ever met and I was getting tired of this. I pull out my gun and fire it at his feet, twice for each leg. It barely grazes the tip of his expensive oxfords yet he didn't flinch, just gave me an unimpressed look. "You just had to suck all the fun out of everything, don't you?" He sighs and comes over to my desk, pointing at the girl in the picture. "You've obviously heard the rumours going around that Cypher has risen from the dead, right?"

“Come on. I’ll take you upstairs to rest.” He stood and guided her toward the stairs. Finn and Calvin exchanged a look. Then they followed right after them. God, I wanted to go eavesdrop so badly. Linda, sitting beside me, muttered under her breath, “Slutty bitch.” That jogged my memory. There was a drugging subplot around this part of the story. If I remembered correctly, Linda was the culprit. She had been secretly in love with Calvin for years, but Calvin only had eyes for Nancy. In the original novel, she managed to drug him, but afterward he turned the tables and dosed her ten times worse, leaving her stranded with no help. She ended up with a terrible fate.

Went limp. I kept squeezing. Making sure. Making absolutely sure they couldn't get up and try again. When I finally released them, they weren't breathing. Dead. I'd killed them. With my bare hands. And I felt nothing but satisfaction. The nursery door burst open. Kael stood there, Nyx behind him, both in fighting stance ready for threats. They froze, staring at the scene. We have eight floors to get through, each floor is going to be full of hostile killers with only one thought in mind — taking us down. Our only hope is to kill them before they kill us. Aim weapons at the vital points — eyes and balls — and if you lose your weapon... Hai-ya!” I struck the air with the edge of my palm. “Karate chop.” Claire grabbed the front of her mask and slowly pulled it off. “We aren’t going to fight our way out are we?”

"You have a job to do, then I can let you go without harm." She slowly raised her head but down down immediately. "What job?" He moved closer, "You killed Keisha and now, you will have to bring her back." She quickly looked up. "I didn't kill....." It then occured to her. She remembered what had happened to her the night she got drunk. She tried killing herself but she didn't, then she went back to her apartment. Seeing how perfect Keisha's life was, having two men willing to do everything for her and everyone adoring her, she killed her. She killed her female lead out of jealousy.
