"So sure." The book spun faster under his touch. Pages blurred together until they were just streaks of light and shadow. Then it stopped, settling on a page that looked like all the others but somehow wasn't. "She borrowed and returned the Bloodline Codex." "What is that?" "It is a book that records all supernatural houses. The ones that matter at least." My phone chimed. I fumbled for it, nearly dropping the stack of books in the process. The message was short and impersonal.

I approached slowly, the heels of my boots clicking softly on the polished floor. Drawn like a moth to a flame, I skimmed my fingers across the titles etched on the spines. Tales of kings. Wars. Bloodlines. My gaze caught on a thick, weathered book left open on the desk. Its title was simple: Pack Histories and Blood Betrayals. A cold shiver rippled through me. I leaned over, my shadow swallowing the page, and began to read. At first, it was the usual: chronicles of battles, treaties, ascensions. But then, a word snared me, rooted me in place:

The forbidden text inscribed within revealed itself slowly but surely; ancient runes etched in blood-red ink that seemed to pulsate with dark energy. The book looks scary. I have not read a single rule yet but I know I won't like what I see. The book is stained with blood and I wonder whose blood is that? Could it be someone they killed in the house? The thought makes me panic. My hands start to shake. I can't control it. And then the book falls to the ground with a loud thud.
