“You will not touch her again!” Alexander half yells and half growls. I can feel his self-control waning through our bond, his temptation to give up the entire kingdom just to cross the prairie and take me in his arms. Wait, I think. I know he can’t hear my thoughts, but I hope the sentiment translates somehow through our connection. I hope he understands that I can hold on a little longer, that I want him to consider our people. I don’t look up though. I believe to my core that my life is not worth the kingdom, but I don’t think that’s what Alexander would see in my eyes. I can feel my very real fear brimming just at the edge of my emotions, threatening to overtake me.

Not the natural kind that came with the stormy night but something more sinister and it felt like it had seeped into its very foundation. He off course knew it had to be Vaerik's doing. How cruel could he be? Even from where he stood, he could feel it the tension and fear in the air. The people moved around while watching their backs and guards walked around like they were mini gods. They had become too aggressive and was ever ready to draw out their weapon against anyone who tried to oppose them. This was not the kingdom he had once ruled, something was terribly broken or missing and he swore in his heart to make it right.

But fear had entered the fortress. Not fear of Matthias. Not even fear of war. This was older than that. The First Kingdom was supposed to be legend. A fallen empire swallowed by blood and ruin centuries before any living wolf had drawn breath. Children grew up hearing stories about its kings and sacred bloodlines the same way humans spoke of myths meant to frighten or inspire. Ancient wolves. Moon-blessed rulers. Thrones bound by blood and magic. Stories. Nothing more. At least that was what I had believed. Until now.

"It will have to be." The days pass. The kingdom prepares. Wolves train. Fortifications are built. Scouts patrol the borders. But nothing comes. Day after day, the kingdom waits. The threat lingers, unseen, unheard. "Maybe it was a bluff," my mother says. "Maybe the disciples were trying to scare us." "Maybe. But I do not think so." "You are right to be wary. The other elders listened carefully. “We have protected this kingdom for a thousand years.” His hand gripped the edge of his robe. “We have kept dangerous secrets buried.” His eyes moved toward the blue light in the distance. “And we will not stand here quietly while a shiftless girl enters our home, changes our King, and threatens everything our ancestors built.” The chamber fell silent. But I could feel it. The decision had already begun. They were afraid of Calista. And fear was something I knew how to use.

I reached for the recent book I was reading, a book titled Tales beyond the five Kingdoms. I had picked out this book when I first heard father and mother would be traveling beyond the five Kingdom. I had wanted to get some insight about the land beyond the Five Kingdoms, but the book was filled with nothing more than the scary tales sailors would tell the villagers when they pass through the kingdom. I had hoped a book about beyond the five Kingdoms would settle my mind and assure me that my father and mother would be safe on their journey. But the book is filled with shadowy creatures and monsters that feed on humans and animals alike.
