Another just above my collarbone. And in the middle of absolutely destroying my remaining dignity, he says calmly, “Get the omegas to clean.” Like he isn’t currently kissing me breathless in front of my bodyguard. Somewhere behind us, Evan answers without missing a beat. “Yes, sir.” The footsteps retreat almost immediately afterward, fading quietly down the hallway beyond us. And I stay completely still for one full second before whispering against Alaric’s shoulder, “I’m going to kill you.”

From that day on, my world had warmth in it. He was the first person who made me believe that gentleness could be real. He was the only redemption in my long, lonely adolescence. I snapped back to the present. My cheeks were wet with tears. The light that had once illuminated my entire world was shining on someone else these days. The chime of the doorbell pulled me out of the spell of the past. I went to answer it. Shane rushed in and pulled me into his arms. He smelled of the night air and the salty sea.

Despite that, it's peaceful, the perfect place to kiss Alec for the first time. "I am so ready to kiss you," he murmurs, reaching up to gently hold either side of my face. His fingertips are cold against my skin, an icy breeze sweeping down the valley, pulling strands of stray hair across my face. Alec brushes them away, leaning down slowly. I close my eyes, bracing myself for his lips to press against mine.

The waning moon's small crescent shape was a silver glitter against the dark water of the Caribbean sea. Just before Leo closed the door, I heard the soft rumble of applause as Bastian began his speech inside. The door sealed with a soft thud, separating Leo and me from the rest of the world. It was warm and dark out here, and still thrumming with the magic of Bastian and Ava's reunion. I wanted to be in a world with just Leo, even if it was only for a moment.
