My eyes fall shut, trying to keep the tears at bay. “I accepted the path of darkness for myself. I’m a vampire,” Lucas continues. “That’s what we are. That’s what’s inside of us. Darkness.” He slips one hand under me, and my heart swells in my chest. “I believed I could never be anything but dark. I let it consume me, and I told myself that’s how things were meant to be. For over a thousand years I clung onto that false truth…and then I met you.” A tear rolls down my cheek.

I didn’t have the power to say no and he knew it. “Yes, Rhett. I want that.” My eyes hold his, mesmerized as they lighten from the dangerous black to his beautiful greens. Gone were the black eyes, and the white marks centered on his pupil. The mark of the knight as it was called. It was odd, never having seen it before. But I had heard the tales of the queen's knights. Their strength and courage. They were legends in our parts. And I belonged to the fourth knight. That darkness I saw shining on the surface, the way he begins to partially shift. It’s his beast, I can bring that side out of him.

Gavin frowned. "He said we're just going to find the princess." Their eyes widened when they heard. "Princess?" They asked at the same time, Gavin nodded. "I'll explain later, but what does that person say that you just have to play to find Sera?" Zera said. He was really confused and didn't think that the people he met earlier were willing to kill. Nash and Clayton looked serious. "You are wrong Zera. This game he is talking about is not only about finding her, this game is about killing." Clayton said. Zera gulped at what she heard and the men clenched their fists.

They were uneasy - this palace was unfamiliar, and the darkness sure didn’t help. I, however, knew every inch of this place. This was my domain. The first knight barely had time to register the whisper of a blade before it slid across his throat in a practiced movement. I caught his body before it could slump to the ground, lowering it gently. One down. The others, unaware, continued scanning the dark, their torches offering little aid. Flickering light distorted their vision, casting deceptive shadows. A second knight fell, his mouth opening in a silent gasp as her dagger pierced through his neck.

There was someone here? (In his mother’s story, the knight had called to the darkness, voice echoing, “Hello? Is there someone here?”) He immediately peeked past the worn, serious-looking books and saw a cloaked figure of a small child–a little girl, judging by her long locks of lovely black hair and a white dress that shimmered in the light like a bride’s wedding gown. ‘…The knight found a princess.’ A split second after, she suddenly fell to the floor, twisting violently like a fish on a hook as though her entire body was being lashed violently by an invisible whip.

I'd love to make their life worse than hell. Aurora is mine and only I have a right to touch her, hurt her, make her cry and own her smile, although I doubt that she will ever smile because of me or for me until I force it out of her. She has awakened the monster which I never knew existed in me, her innocence makes me want to consume her soul and I will. I am no light but the darkness itself, and she will be consumed by darkness. "The atmosphere is dry, Torin. There's no mana left up there to feed the light spells. Every arrow I shoot takes a piece of my own core." To prove his point, a human knight three paces away raised his shortsword to parry a lunging shadow-blade. The moment the dark weapon touched the knight's steel, a wave of black frost rushed up the blade. "They aren't dying!" the knight screamed, his voice pitching into pure panic as his iron weapon shattered into gray powder. "Every time we cut one down, two more rise out of the dark!"

But we can't avoid this conversation anymore. I spent my entire life alone in the darkness. The coldness is what I know and feel with or without him, just like those colors- grey, black and white. I am familiar with them as they are what I see around me, so I believe I can manage the rest of my life like this. But I have to confirm that he doesn't want me anymore.

I screamed, rushing to his side. “Stay back!” he barked, pushing himself to his feet. Mateo moved to stand between us and the figure, his expression grim. “Rayne, get out of here. Now.” “I’m not leaving you,” I said, my voice shaking. The figure laughed again, his green eyes glowing brighter. “Such loyalty. How touching. But it won’t save you.” “Who are you?” I demanded, forcing myself to stand tall. “What do you want?” The figure’s gaze locked on mine, and for a moment, the world seemed to stop. “I am the darkness,” he said simply. “And I’ve come for what’s mine.”

I demanded, feeling a knot of anxiety tighten in my chest. Whitman sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “There’s an ancient darkness that was thought to have been defeated years ago. It was a force that once controlled the rogues, bending them to its will.” My heart skipped a beat. “You’re saying it’s back?” Whitman nodded. “Yes. This darkness is seeking revenge, and it has resurfaced with a new leader. The Blackthorns are merely its instruments.” Eli exchanged a worried glance with me. “And what does this have to do with the traitor?”
