I screamed, rushing to his side.
“Stay back!” he barked, pushing himself to his feet.
Mateo moved to stand between us and the figure, his expression grim. “Rayne, get out of here. Now.”
“I’m not leaving you,” I said, my voice shaking.
The figure laughed again, his green eyes glowing brighter. “Such loyalty. How touching. But it won’t save you.”
“Who are you?” I demanded, forcing myself to stand tall. “What do you want?”
The figure’s gaze locked on mine, and for a moment, the world seemed to stop. “I am the darkness,” he said simply. “And I’ve come for what’s mine.”
