Theodora's POV The council chamber fell silent. Every werewolf in the room stared at Richard waiting for his answer. I watched his face carefully. Saw the micro-expressions that flashed across it before he could control them. Panic. Rage. Calculation. Then the mask slammed back into place. "Thomas Steele was a colleague as I said." Richard's voice was calm. Measured. "We worked together on pack documentation projects. His death was tragic but natural. He had an undiagnosed heart condition. It took him suddenly."

The irritating explanations for why he always took my best friend to private gatherings and introduced me as his secretary to almost everyone we knew. Oh, how stupid I was. Silas didn't just break my heart, he fired me on the spot, took my credit cards and threw me out of the house after accusing me of intentionally spiking his drink so he would lose the game — which he did lose. I almost lost my mind. I had nothing left with me. Ten years of my life just went down the drain. I was about to kill myself when a church took me in. I turned the corner too quickly and my foot caught against the uneven sidewalk. I crashed hard onto the ground. Pain ripped through my ankle so sharply I cried out, and when I looked down, blood was already sliding from the torn skin onto the concrete. “Fuck,” I breathed shakily. Before I could pull myself up, they were already there. They surrounded me slowly, like hungry wolves cornering prey. “Look what we have here.” One of them grinned, showing alcohol-stained teeth. “A bird.” His hand reached for me, but I shoved it away instantly.

The carpet was clean but it looked old. The door closed behind him. Derek turned around to see Steven in nothing but a bed sheet wrapped around his waist. He was barefoot. His dusty blackish hair was mussed up, practically standing on top of his head. “What the fuck happened to you?” Derek asked in a high-pitched tone. “The hooker I was with robbed me blind,” Steven admitted, all flustered. “This has never happened before.” He padded to one of the beds and sat down. “I . . . was cruising around and saw her standing on the street corner. I had never seen her before.”

Sarah briefly told him what she remembered. “Mindy showed up.” “Her again.” Zachary’s voice turned icy. Sarah lowered her head, as if she didn’t want to talk about it anymore. After a long silence, she asked, “What about Steven?” “He still hasn’t woken up. He was hit in the back of the head. My people are repairing the dashcam footage. I found a hacker from Maritonia. He’s been in Steven’s office for two days already,” Zachary said. Sarah immediately understood what he was trying to do.

After Sir Garten finished speaking, he hung up the phone, as if afraid Amelia would notice something. Just after hanging up, Steven couldn't hold back and cried out in pain.
