The wind stopped, and dark clouds parted to let rays of sunlight fall all around Rose. The gloomy setting of darkness around the land shifted, drifting back like a thing dismissed, and in the gentle illumination before her, she saw the lizard-like creature, black as night on the flat of its belly, and big like a crocodile with its sharp claws glued to the rock, but more agile, seeming stationary, but within, she knew it was deadly fast, and lethal. Its yellow eyes, Rose knew, were fixed on her, but there was nothing to fear.
