He slid the shirt on first, feeling the leather creak as it molded to his body. Then he reached for the pants, the material thick and heavy, and strapped on his boots.

Their hot breath billowed into white clouds in the cold air, kicking up a choking cloud of dust. The lead wagon rumbled to a halt. Bruno jumped down from the driver’s seat, dressed in a crisp Black Rock military uniform. He didn’t look at Eira. He marched straight to the side of the wagon and ripped back the thick waterproof tarp. Blinding metal glint dazzled every eye. Stacked neatly inside were dozens of custom-forged Black Rock steel light armors, their surfaces glowing faintly with defensive runes. Beside them lay bundles of unopened rune-engraved longswords, their hilts wrapped in sweat-absorbent leather.

From the thick underbrush where we hid, I spotted two sentinels standing motionless at the cave entrance. Their faces were completely covered by bone-masked hoods, their forms draped in ragged black robes. It was impossible to tell if they were male or female, if they were even werewolves at all. They didn’t move, not once. Not even when the air shifted with death. When night fell, Xareth moved like a whisper. He stepped forward, his black cloak merging with the darkness. His bow emerged in one fluid motion. He pulled two arrows, and fired in perfect unison.

"You have a five-minute window to board before they reboot. Move." Leo grabbed one of the rifles, checking the chamber. He handed the other to Silas. Silas winced as he took it, his shoulder screaming, but his grip was steady. "Armor," Silas said. They strapped on the kevlar vests. It was bulky, heavy, but it made them look like soldiers.
